You may be trying to decide whether to go with a design agency or a freelance web designer to get your website up and going. There are pros and cons and advantages and disadvantages of using either.
Freelance Designer or Design Agency
Freelancers are great at what they do. They certainly have all the skills needed to get your website up and running. It really depends on your needs and your comfort level, as well as, what you’re willing to spend.
It could once be said that if you needed a minor project done, it’s a great idea to use a freelancer because of the simplicity of the work. This was because freelancers usually specialized in one or two areas. Very few had all the skills necessary to do cross platform work for a complex web design project or company branding. Freelancers were often hired for their expertise on certain parts of the overall project. They were great for an add-on to an in-house team.
Times have changed. In an agency you may have a Project Manager along with a whole team of people that are working on one aspect of the project, whereas, with the freelancer, they have become the “Project Manager” and responsible for the total completion of the project.
Advantages to Hiring a Design Agency?
There used to be advantages to hiring big agencies to complete larger jobs. Economies of scale, strength in numbers, experience and access to more resources. Today this is no longer true. All that a freelancer needs today is a computer and broadband connection.
Now large files can be moved around quickly. Huge jobs, books, videos, presentations, can sit on secure servers anywhere in the world. The freelancer has his work on his computer at home so in the unlikely event of data loss, there is always a backup copy.
If the job is too big for the freelancer, they can just call in someone else to help out. Files can be downloaded from the freelancers FTP site and uploaded when finished.
Why Use a Design Agency
So why use a design agency? I think this comes down to personal preference and the size of your business. If you are small to medium business, then you can certainly benefit from using the freelancer as well as avoid paying the huge costs of an agency. Larger corporations, usually will more money to spend, may feel better using an agency. Agencies have a lot more overhead then the freelancer. Agencies have directors, accountant managers, senior creatives, and junior designers, each with their own ideas, spins and interpretations to confuse the message.
One On One Relationship With a Professional
When you engage with a creative freelancer, you are creating a one-on-one relationship with a professional. You now know who to call on the phone with questions and will get a quick answer without getting stuck in the corporate maze of finding the right department. Last minute changes to a job are often quicker and cheaper with a freelancer.
Also, a freelancer has his reputation on the line on each job and this means more to him than it does to an individual within an agency.
