Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is important if you want your WordPress website to be found by the search engines on the internet. The majority of the searches are done by Google, then there is Bing and Yahoo. But, lets face it, Google is the main one that everyone uses.
What is SEO you say? Well I am going to talk about that and how to increase your SEO in this article by adding keywords and meta descriptions.
What is SEO?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results from search engines.
How does this happen? The way this works with a WordPress site, or really, any site, is to ensure that your website content contains words and phrases that is relevant to what you are offering. These are your “keywords.” Someone is looking for information on the internet, and they are typing in these keywords into their search engine, like Google. They are “Googling” what they are looking for. If you have these keywords on your website, then they will find you and sites like you.
Well this is great right, your bound to be found right? No so fast. They find your site, but it may be so far down on the list that they don’t even notice it. You may have the right keyword on your site, but so does everyone else. You have to make your keywords better so that you are found higher on the list.
Why Add Keywords An Meta Descriptions To Your WordPress Site?
Keywords and meta descriptions let you tell the search engines about the content of your site. These are your posts and pages.
Keywords are important words and phrases that people are likely to search for if they are looking for the content you are offering. The meta description is a simple description of what your post or page is about.
These keywords and meta descriptions are really just HTML tags that are placed in the header of your website. I know, I just lost you, didn’t I, with the HTML thing? That’s ok, as I am going to show you how to use a plugin to do this for you. This way you don’t have to deal with any code.
So some SEO experts may tell your that keywords are not that important anymore. Even Google says that they don’t give that much importance to meta keywords. Other SEO experts disagree and still think that keywords are important.
On the other hand, meta description is very important as you can use it to grab the readers attention.
So, lets take a look now, to how easy it is to add keywords and meta descriptions in WordPress.
Using the Yoast Plugin to add Add Keywords and Meta Descriptions
Go ahead and download the plugin to your site and then open the plugin screen. If you are not sure how to download and install a WordPress plugin, then you can read my article here How To Install A WordPress Plugin.
Now, I am not going to go into how to use all the features of the Yoast SEO plugin, that’s for another day, but I am going to show you how to add your keywords and meta descriptions to help you with SEO.
Enable Meta Keyword Support In Yoast SEO
Yoast SEO comes with support for keywords and meta descriptions. However, the meta keywords feature is turned off by default.
You will first need to enable this feature to add meta descriptions to your WordPress site. Start by visiting SEO >> Dashboard page and then click on the “Features” tab.
Now you need to click on ‘Enabled’ under ‘Advanced settings pages’ option and then click on save changes button to store your changes.
Yoast SEO settings page will now reload and you will be able to see a lot more options under the SEO menu.
Head over to SEO » Titles & Meta page and then click on the ‘Other’ tab.
Now you need to click on ‘Enabled’ under “Use meta keywords tag” option and then click on the save changes button.
You have successfully enabled meta keywords support in Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress. You can now add meta keywords to your posts and pages.
Adding Keywords And Meta Descriptions To Your WordPress Posts and Pages
First, you want to start by editing a post or page. I am going to be using an example post from my local dev site. Pages are done the same way as posts. You want to add a keyword and meta description to your post or page.
Scroll down to the Yoast SEO meta box below the post editor.
You will see your site’s title and automatically generated description as a snippet. Below that you will see Meta Keywords field.
Enter your keywords separated by a comma. Its advised not to use more than 10 keywords or phrases.
Make sure that you only use keywords that are relevant to your content and that you already have these keywords in your article.
Now click on the “Edit Snippet” button and enter your sites description. This will turn the snippet into an editable area.
Make sure that you use your main keyword at least once in your description.
After that click on the ‘Close snippet editor’ button when you are done. You will be able to see your custom description in the snippet preview now.
Congratulations, you have successfully added meta keywords and descriptions to your WordPress post. You can now save or publish your post or page.
